All Blues'd Up - The Songs Of Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin: This Ain't No Tribute Series -- All Blues'd Up! is a collection of songs performed and sometimes written by Led Zeppelin. It seems like the idea of this tribute is to point out the band's obvious blues roots, but the approach isn't the most successful. The problem is that the use of many of the same musicians several times (Eric Gales and James Cotton especially) and the album's very modern approach cause much of the passion and emotion attached to these tunes to simply disappear. The album is too planned-out to evoke the down-and-dirty blues feel, and despite some excellent performances, this is sunk by its smooth production and studio gloss.

All Blues'd Up: Led Zeppelin album was released Jul 09, 2002 on the Compendia Music Group label. Recording information: Ardent Studsio, Memphis, TX; Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, IL; Dockside Studios, Maurice, LA. All Blues'd Up: Led Zeppelin music CDs Arrangers: Dave Smith ; Eric Gales. All Blues'd Up - The Songs of Janis Joplin

Another in Entertainment One’s This Ain’t No Tribute series, this one features 13 tracks associated with Janis Joplin done in blues style by veteran singers in the genre. Since everything Joplin recorded essentially came out of her own Texas roadhouse approach to love, life, and music, nothing here is a serious departure from what she did in the first place, but it’s nice to hear Joplin gems like “Ball and Chain” done by the great Etta James, “Piece of My Heart” in the Otis Clay version, and Taj Mahal's wonderful and inspired take on “Mercedes Benz.”

All Blues'd Up - The Songs of Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton has drawn so much from the blues -- a position he has admitted, endorsed, and never denied -- that it seems just a bit odd to see his songs (including songs he covered, like Robert Johnson's “Crossroads,” that have become Clapton songs in many people’s minds) translated back into a blues format when most of them were never far removed from the blues in the first place. Here we have it, though, versions of Clapton-associated songs done by blues veterans, including Carl Weathersby (“Lay Down Sally”), Buddy Guy (“Strange Brew”), Bo Diddley (he offers his own take on his own composition “Before You Accuse Me,” a song Clapton has played frequently in concert), and Honeyboy Edwards and James Cotton (they team up for a nice version of Johnson's “Crossroads”), and if it seems like one has heard all this before, well, that’s because Clapton did them.

All Blues'd Up Series - The Song of The Rolling Stones (2003)

That the Rolling Stones built a long and illustrious career with the blues as a template is hardly any kind of revelation, and while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards developed into a pretty fair and often brilliant songwriting team, the Stones themselves never ventured too far from the Chicago blues model that brought them all together in the first place. It should come as no surprise, then, that when veteran blues players get their hands on a Rolling Stones song, it usually works out well. This set has several examples of this migration back to the blues, and some of them, like Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown's shakedown of “Ventilator Blues,” Otis Clay's stunning take on “Wild Horses,” and Johnny Copeland's guitar-dominated “Tumblin’ Dice” (it was Copeland's last recording before his death in 1997), are near definitive interpretations. This set is a perfect illustration that “whatever goes around, comes around.” ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi.

Blues Power ~ Songs Of Eric Clapton

Although Blues Power: Songs of Eric Clapton contains a couple versions of blues standards recorded at one time or another by Clapton, it's mostly devoted to covers of Clapton compositions by blues veterans and relative newcomers alike (i.e., either influences on Clapton or artists who have been influenced by him). The performances are generally spot-on, but that's to be expected from an artist roster that includes Koko Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Larry McCray, and Eric Gales, among others.

Paint It, Blue ~ Songs Of The Rolling Stones

The idea behind Paint It Blue: Songs of the Rolling Stones is such a simple, appealing one that it's a wonder that the record wasn't made before 1997. The Stones never made any secret of their debt to the blues, so it makes sense that their songs would sound good when performed by blues and R&B artists. That's the idea behind Paint It Blue -- contemporary blues and R&B artists sing some of the band's bluesiest songs. While some may quibble that the idea is a little too cute, the performances by Luther Allison ("You Can't Always Get What You Want"), Junior Wells ("(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"), Taj Mahal ("Honky Tonk Women"), Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown ("Ventilator Blues"), the Holmes Bros. ("Beast of Burden") and Bobby Womack ("It's All Over Now"), among many others, are hard to argue with. It's a rock-solid record that confirms what great songwriters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are.

Will Sessions - The Elmatic Instrumentals

Um som diferente, que ouvi, gostei e partilho aqui...

"The name Will Sessions was born as a producer alias of trumpeter Sam Beaubien. After sharpening his keyboard skills and learning writing and arrangement from the accomplished David Van De Pitte (who arranged for countless Motown recordings including Marvin Gaye’s album What’s Going On) at Wayne State University, he decided to start a band. With classmates Tim Shellaberger (bass) and Bryan Arnold (drums) along with recruits Ryan Gimpert (guitar) and Eric Kacir (Percussion), the band was complete.T h e y helped to develop a nascent monthly funk music party called Motor City Funk Night, and three years later, the party has grown into one of the sta- ples of the Detroit scene, and Will Sessions were playing in front of crowds of up to 3000 people.
The success of the Funk Night parties led to significant studio work with artists like Black Milk, Mayer Hawthorne, and Slum Village, and the hip hop sessions in particular led Beaubien to concoct the idea of Will Sessions recreating his favorite sample-based music in a live setting with the full band. His vision would be realized with three smash concerts in 2009 for Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, and Phat Kat, which left hip hop fans in awe of how the band stayed faithful to the original sampled and programmed beats, while creatively elevating the songs to new heights by recreating them live. It was the particular challenge of duplicating the unique beats of J Dilla that gave Beaubien the confidence to work on the emcee Elzhi’s anticipated project Elmatic.
Elmatic had been initially planned and announced in 2008 as a tribute to the historic 1994 album Illmatic by Nas, but it wasn’t until early 2011 that Elzhi and his manager Jae Barber agreed that it would be best to recreate all of the beats from scratch--and there was clearly nobody who could do it better than producer Sam Beaubien and Will Sessions. Since it’s widely considered to be the holy grail of hip hop recordings, the prospect of du- plicating the music from Illmatic was daunting. By using the original sam- ple sources of the album’s tracks as a foundation, producer Beaubien and the band members managed to recreate both the sound and the mood of the classic album with stunning precision on Elmatic, exceeding lofty expectations set by loyal fans and skeptical critics alike.
With an ever-increasing body of recorded work, a skyrocketing reputation within their hometown market, and their first tastes of national and international interest, Will Sessions are primed to be among Detroit’s hottest musical exports."

The Plastic People of the Universe - Czech Rock

The Plastic People of the Universe (PPU) is a Czech rock band from Prague. It was the foremost representative of Prague's underground culture (1968–1989), which had gone against the grain of Czechoslovakia's Communist regime. Due to their non-conformism, members of the band often suffered serious repercussions such as arrests. The group continues to perform despite the death of its founder, main composer and bassist, Milan "Mejla" Hlavsa in 2001.

The Mandrake Memorial - Psychedelic Progressive Rock and Acid Folk

The Mandrake Memorial biography ( Progarchives.com):
THE MANDRAKE MEMORIAL, formed by Craig Anderton (guitar, sitar, electronics), Michael Kac (keyboards), John Kevin Lally (drums) and Randy Monaco (bass, lead vocals) in 1967, were one of renowned Philadelphia-based rock bands along with THE NAZZ during the late 1960s. They got started performances mainly in The Trauma, produced by Manny Rubin as a new club located in the middle of Samson Street, where they eventually could attract notice of Poppy Records, an affiliated label of MGM. In the fall of 1967 they signed with Poppy Records and released three albums - 'The Mandrake Memorial' (1968), 'Medium' (1969), and 'Puzzle' (1970). THE MANDRAKE MEMORIAL were a short-lived outfit disbanded by Michael's withdrawal shortly before the last album 'Puzzle' released, but much influenced by 60s psychedelic rock or folk rock, and moreover blended with their unique originality such as Craig's epochmaking electronics or Michael's Rock-Si-Chord, their soundscape was worth calling a pioneer of Psychedelic Progressive Rock and Acid Folk.

One - Psychedelic Folk Rock

Um sonzinho bem agradável, com uma batera bem marcante e uma gaitinha animal.

"A little-known album whose participants were better known for session work. Brent Forbes, who was in  Locust in the mid-seventies, also worked for Bob Pegg and  The Surprise Sisters; Norman Leppard played with  Aynsley Dunbar and Alan Marshall, who was in  Zebra in the mid-seventies, played for  Pete Bardens. Conrad Isadore was most prolific of all - cropping up on several other artists albums. Soul influenced prog rock, with a few funk moves, and featuring long, improv driven tracks with soulish vocals, some brass, organ, flute, some strings, and a mix of light and heavy"

Eric Clapton & Wynton Marsalis

E agora, Eric Clapton.

New York City’s premier jazz venue got the blues last April when Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton performed together in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center for two sold-out shows dedicated to vintage blues. The extraordinary collaboration, billed as Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, paired these musical virtuosos with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as they brought to life a repertoire of songs selected by Clapton and arranged by Marsalis.

Wynton Marsalis (trumpet)
Eric Clapton (guitar, vocal)
Dan Nimmer (piano)
Carlos Henriquez (bass)
Ali Jackson (drums)
Marcus Printup (trumpet)
Victor Goines (clarinet)
Chris Crenshaw (trombone, vocals)
Don Vappie (banjo)
Chris Stainton (keyboard)

"This collaboration was a pure joy because Eric is about music. We didn’t have any pettiness or stupidity about anything small. It takes great courage to come to New York and learn 12 new arrangements in three days, front a band that you’ve never played with in a form of music you don’t normally play, play three concerts, and sing almost all of the material. Eric did this flawlessly, and after all of that he told me, “I’d rather play the rhythm parts than play any solos.” That’s why I love and respect him."
